Word on the street is Madison Heights is the place to go for good, authentic Vietnamese food. However, Detroit is home to a great Pho spot: Pho Lucky, located right on Woodward St in Midtown.
Pho is a Vietnamese noodle soup, usually served with beef is a Vietnamese favorite dish. Vietnamese comfort food, if you will. The soup includes noodles made from rice flour and is often served with Asian basil, cilantro, chopped green onion, lime, and bean sprouts which are added as a garnish to the soup by the diner.
Pho Lucky has around 12 different types of Pho on their Detroit menu. Lucky for me, Pho Lucky has vegetarian and vegan options.
There are two size options at Pho Lucky: Regular and Large. For just $10.95, you can get the large option which comes served in a bowl bigger than your head! It’s massive and you will have a hefty portion as leftovers the next day.
Tip: Add extra noodles or meat for $2
Pho in a vegetarian broth with shrimp: Clear, vegetable broth, noodles, broccoli, onion, carrots, bok choy (my favorite), shrimp, topped with basil, green onion, jalapeno, and bean sprouts. I was surprised at how flavorful the broth was. Rich, “meaty” and just good. It was delicious and loaded with fresh veggies. I added sriracha and hoison sauce for added spice and sweetness. If you’re sick, this will kick that cold!
My first pho experience was a good one. Service was good and the owner really shows he cares by paying a visit to each table. I will definitely be back. Pho is great if you’re feeling under the weather, want to warm up on a cold, rainy day, or if you want to indulge in something delicious and affordable. Pho Lucky has 3 other locations: Novi, Redford, and Southfield so you can visit the one closest to you.
