We’re taking a little break from Detroit, and venturing to Hamtramck, MI and making a stop at California Burgerz. I have been eating Polish food in Hamtramck for years and was super excited when I heard a burger place opened up. California Burgerz, which opened a few months ago on Conant St, models California’s In-N-Out Burger. The menu is simple and consists of burgers, fries, and shakes. Don’t let that fool you, California Burgerz is putting its own flare on things, using quality ingredients, and preparing food that actually tastes good. It is many steps above In-N-Out and doesn’t have that fast food vibe. Major plus!
California Burgerz offers an array of burgers: Classic Cheeseburger, Double, Triple, Quad (little obnoxious, but I respect it), and more that take things to the next level; the Gorilla Burger (featuring caramelized onions on a pretzel bun), LA Bacon Burger, Swiss Mushroom Burger, Veggie Burger, and a Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich. All burgers are made with Halal premium Angus beef, ground in house daily, and come topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, and CB sauce. There are four different fry choices: Regular, Cheese Fries, Curvy, and Gorilla Fries (loaded with a ton of goodies). California Burgerz also offers five different shake options: Banana, Cappuccino, Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry.
I went with the Double CB, because honestly, that’s all I could handle. 8 oz of premium Angus Beef, tomato, lettuce, onion, American cheese, CB sauce on a brioche bun. It was delicious! I really prefer American cheese on my burgers. It’s creamier and melts better than Cheddar. The burger itself had great flavor and was served on a toasted brioche bun that held up to all the toppings. It was a combination of the quality of beef used and the seasoning. It was so good that we ended up asking the owner who said it was his secret blend of spices that he mixes up each morning. Of course, I had to ask what was in it. He wouldn’t reveal (as he shouldn’t), but did send me home with a sample which was super cool of him. The burger wasn’t sloppy, overdressed, or had that slippage of tomato with each bite. Well put together. The only thing that was missing is pickles!
Curvy Fries: Crispy on the outside, soft and tender on the inside. Everything you love about a curly fry, but more “meat.” Some fries are thin, little crunchy pieces, but these still had some potato texture to them. The fries are cut in house which means you can taste quality and freshness.
Before California Burgerz, there wasn’t a burger spot in the city and word on the street is that the owner, Hani Omasan wanted to open a place where local teens can sit down and enjoy a decent meal. Looks like he succeeded. California Burgerz has great food, reasonable prices, and when the owner personally asks you how the food is and gives you some of his secret seasoning, that’s pretty damn good customer service. If you haven’t tried California Burgerz, it’s a must! Skip the fast food line next time and take on quality.
