Chef Anthony Lombardo, the artist behind SheWolf, spent three weeks in Rome last Summer gaining inspiration for the long awaited “pasta factory,” which opened its doors June 29, 2018. Located just a few doors down from Honest John’s in Midtown, Detroit, MI, SheWolf offers modern Italian dishes, with a Roman influence. The menu is broken down into courses with the pasta being the focal point. SheWolf offers 10 different styles of pasta including whole wheat extruded pasta, finely milled (daily) durum and egg pasta, traditional Roman pasta, and even gluten free options. One of my favorite features of SheWolf is the glass-enclosed pasta room where you can watch the milling of flour and extruding of the heritage-grain pastas that are made fresh in house daily. Aside from pasta, one can also find options such as the Grilled Lamb Ribs and Wild Red Snapper and various vegetarian choices.
Blue Steel Focaccia-Potato, rosemary, Gorgonzola Dolce Latte D.O.P which is a soft, buttery blue cheese. I liked that the focaccia was filled with nooks and crannies which made it perfect when the gorgonzola was spread on top. This type of gorgonzola had a milder flavor, but still encompassed that pungent bite that it’s known for.
Carciofi E Sedano
Shaved artichokes, pine nuts, celery, lovage, lemon. This dish was light, bright, and perfect for Summer. I have only ever experienced steamed artichokes so I jumped on this when I saw it on the menu. The pine nuts added a nice nutty flavor that complimented the lemon and crunch of the artichokes well.
Salt roasted baby beets, La Tur triple cream, Michigan Berries, pistachio pesto. Roasted beets are one of my favorite vegetables and this dish did not disappoint. I liked the blend of red and golden beets paired with the sweet berries. The pistachio pesto was delicious with the triple cream. With each bite, I experienced sweet, nutty, salty, and creamy. Very nice!
Farinata Fiori Di Zucchine
Chick pea pancake, poblano and pistachio salsa verde, charred shishito peppers. I had to order this when I saw two of my favorite items come together: pistachio & salsa verde! The pancake itself had a nice texture and was full of flavor. There was a slight heat from the peppers and a brightness from the salsa verde that offered a bold finish.
Scarpinocc Di Patate (Iraqi Durum)
Potato filled pasta, spring onions, Taleggio D.O.P. “fonduta”, fermented ramps. Taleggio D.O.P is a soft cheese with a mild and tangy flavor. Our server described this cheese as pungent so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was delicious! The flavor was more subtle than expected which was delightful. I can best describe the potato filled pasta as an Italian pierogi, only blanketed in a creamy cheese sauce. This dish was my favorite!
I was impressed with all the vegan and vegetarian options SheWolf has. Our server did a phenomenal job of walking us through the menu and explaining each section. Service was good with the exception that our server missed my order of Sweet & Sour Eggplant. No big deal, it will just give me another reason to go back!
P.S. I am certain that Lisa Way from WRIF’s Dave & Chuck the Freak show was at the table next to me. That or it was a pretty solid doppelganger.
