Streetbeet is a vegan pop up restaurant in Detroit, MI. I heard about the Taco Hell pop up from a friend a few weeks ago and decided to check it out. I am vegetarian, not fully vegan, but do eat vegan dishes from time to time. This Taco Hell pop up changed my life! The two ladies behind Streetbeet took a handful of items off of Taco Bell’s menu and created delicious, mouthwatering vegan versions. Honestly, it was better than the originals!
Double Cheesy Gordita Crunch: Crunchy corn tortilla, walnut ground beef, lettuce, spicy ranch, shredded cheese, wrapped in a cheesy beefy flatbread style tortilla. This was my favorite! Cheesy Gordita Crunch’s are my go to and the vegan version was even better than the original! The walnut ground beef was a tad salty, but overall it was good. The texture and flavor was very close to actual ground beef which blew my mind! I couldn’t even tell this was a meat substitute.
Double Decker Taco: Crunchy corn tortilla, walnut ground beef, shredded cheese, and lettuce wrapped in a refried bean slathered flour tortilla. Who doesn’t enjoy a double decker taco?! The combo of a crunchy and soft tortilla was great! I liked that the shredded cheese was seasoned, it added a little extra flavor to this taco. The walnut ground beef was so good that it has inspired me to attempt making it at home. Solid!
Crunchwrap Supreme: Crunchy tostada, walnut ground beef, lettuce, tomato, cashew nacho cheese, cashew sour cream, wrapped in a grilled flour tortilla. This was good, but the toppings got lost in the crunch wrap and all I could taste was the walnut ground beef. This could have occurred when the crunch wrap supreme was placed in a panini press type machine and grilled, and all the ingredients melted together. Kudos for minimal messiness and handheld capability.
Chalupa Supreme: Deep fried flatbread style tortilla, walnut ground beef, shredded, cheese, lettuce, tomato, cashew sour cream. Add cashew nacho cheese for $1. Loved this! The crispy, puffy chalupa shell was awesome. The ingredients were equally distributed across the whole taco. The cashew sour cream was delicious, but this taco needed more of it! I also liked the shredded cheese. I have had other vegan cheeses and they are super weird. This was the closest to real cheese I’ve experienced.
Nacho Cheese “Doritos” Locos Taco Supreme: Nacho cheese “Dorito” seasoned crunchy tortilla, walnut ground beef, cashew sour cream, lettuce, tomato, shredded cheese. A very close recreation to the original! I like that the taco shells were dusted with nacho cheese seasoning, giving it that homemade feel versus store bought. Well done!
Nacho Fries: Seasoned french fries & cashew nacho cheese. The fries were generously seasoned and crispy. I can’t believe this nacho cheese was made out of cashews and tasted so good!
Each item was between $6-9 (little pricey), but very filling! Word on the street is that Streetbeet is opening up their own restaurant space. For now, catch Streetbeet doing pop ups throughout the city. Follow Streetbeet’s Instagram and Facebook accounts for all the details. Don’t miss Streetbeet’s Vegan Taco Hell 4, October 16, 2018, 6PM @ PJ’s Lager House in Detroit, MI. I recommend getting there early and grabbing a drink. Enjoy!
